Abstract
Background and Objectives: The pathogenesis of OME is considered to be multifactorial with viral upper respiratory tract infection and Eustachian tube dysfunction. Allergy was another etiological factor. The aim of this study is to determine the possible role of allergic rhinitis (AR) in children with operated OME.

Subjects and Methods: A prospective analysis was carried out on 60 children with otitis media with effusion (OME) and 62 control subjects. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis, serum eosinophil count and serum total IgE level were compared between children with OME and control subjects. Middle ear effusion IgE level was compared between OME children with and without allergic rhinitis.

Results: The prevalence of AR in OME children (28.3%) and control subjects (37.7%) was not statistically significant. No significant differences were found in serum eosinophil count, serum total IgE level and middle ear effusion IgE between OME children and control subjects.

Conclusion: Allergic rhinitis may not be related to develp otitis media with effusion in children.
